FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: secure element (30) is disclosed that includes at least a microprocessor (31), a nonvolatile memory (34), and a communication interface (36). The secure element (30) is configured to communicate with the update device (10) to update the working system of the secure element via the communication interface (36), the non-volatile memory (34) stores at least the initiation programme (38), and the microprocessor (31) is configured to execute the initiation programme (38) upon the start of the secure element (30). The initiation programme (38) contains commands for implementing: a start-up step (E1, E12) to determine whether the nonvolatile storage device (34) contains an active operating programme (35), and in case of a positive result of the determination, to start the execution of the operating system (35); a step (E4, E5, E6, E7, E13, E14) to authenticate the update device (10) depending on the first authentication data (AUTH30) identified by the secure element (30), and the second authentication data (AUTH10) received by the update device (10); a step (E9, E10) to memorize a new operating system received from the update device (10) in a nonvolatile storage device (34); and a step (E11) to activate a new operating system. When the update process of the operating system is started and the non-volatile memory stores an active operating system, the secure element is configured to choose the operating system as an update application, and if an inactive operating system, the - to choose an initiation programme as an update application.

EFFECT: ensuring the update of the operating system in a reliable and safe method.
