FIELD: oil and gas industry.
SUBSTANCE: method involves measuring absorption capacity of the formation fluid sample at a plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation using a spectrometer and determining the difference between multiple types of fluids to identify the type of fluid sample which most closely corresponds to the real type of the fluid sample based on the absorption measurement at two or more wavelengths from a plurality of wavelengths, at that determining the difference between the multiple fluid types comprises comparing the measured absorption at a first wavelength of two or more wavelengths with a measured absorption at a second wavelength of two or more wavelengths, calculating the absorption value based on the measured absorption at the first wavelength and the measured absorption at the second wavelength and using the calculated absorption value to determine the difference between the multiple fluid types, comparison of the calculated absorption value with a set of control data on the calculated absorption values for different types of formation fluids to identify the most probable type of fluid sample.
EFFECT: increased accuracy of formation fluids characteristics.
