FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method of operating a water softener (1) with an automatic dilution device (19) is that the feeding flow Vroh of raw water is divided into the first partial flow Vteil1, which is softened, and the second partial flow Vteil2, which is not softened, and both partial flows Vteil1 and Vteil2 are combined in the flow Vverschnitt of mixed water. Shares ofVteil1, Ateil2 of both partial flows in the flow Vverschnitt of mixed water are regulated by the automatic dilution device (19) so that a given stiffness SW in the flow Vverschnitt of mixed water is performed. The regulated shares of Vteil1, Ateil2 of the both partial flows are calculated from the stiffness Hroh of raw water and the stiffness Hweich of softened water, and the stiffness value of Hroh of raw water is derived from the conductivity LFroh of raw water, the conductivity LFweich of softened water is measured by the conductivity sensor (9a) in the softened first partial flow Vteil1, and the conductivity LFverschnitt of mixed water is measured by the conductivity sensor (9b) in the flow Vverschnitt of mixed water. The shares of Vteil1, Ateil2 of the partial flows in the flow Vverschnitt of mixed water, and the conductivity LFroh of raw water is calculated from the measured conductivity LFweich of softened water, measured conductivity LFverschnitt of mixed water and calculated fractions of Vteil1, Ateil2 of the partial flows.

EFFECT: invention provides for the regulation of the stiffness of mixed water with a high reliability and superior accuracy.
