FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a water softener and a method of operating a water softener. Water softening device (100; 200) comprises filter (101; 201) configured to eliminate stiffness from first flow of untreated water to produce second flow of softened water. Filter (101; 201) comprises ion exchange (IEX; material: ion exchange) material, which is saturated with first-type cation originating from indicator salt, and a second-type cation originating from the regenerating salt. IEX material shows lower affinity to first cation than to stiffness ions. At the same time, IEX material demonstrates higher affinity to the first cation than to the second cation. First type cation and the second type cation differ in values of ionic molar conductivity. Electrical parameter of the second flow is monitored by sensor (112; 212). Change of electric parameter is used as indicator of filter depletion state (101; 201).
EFFECT: technical result consists in possibility to use full capacity of IEX material, which reduces consumption of salt and waste water compared to standard mode of operation of water softener.
