SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a water softener and to a method of operating a water softener. Water softening device contains filter, which is made with possibility to reduce hardness of the first flow of untreated water with production of the second water flow with reduced rigidity, first sensor for measuring electrical parameter of first flow and second sensor for measuring electric parameter of second flow. Ratio of the measured parameters can be used as an indicator for assessing the state of depletion of the filter. Filter contains an ion-exchange resin which operates in H+ mode. Ion-exchange resin is buffered with at least one salt selected from a group consisting of a potassium salt, a sodium salt and a lithium salt.
EFFECT: group of inventions provides protection of the device from lime scale and serves to prevent the pH of the treated water from falling to a too low value (especially at the beginning of the cycle), and also provides an indication of the state of depletion of the filter in the water softening method.
