FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: heating the steel surface of the rail by directing the high-temperature plasma jet and then cooling to provide a reinforced layer on the side surface of the rail head, according to the invention, the heating is carried out by an air plasma arc at a current strength of 90-160 A, a voltage of 130-160 V, cm/min, product conveying speed of 50-200 cm/min and the distance from the plasmotron nozzle exit to the product surface is 20-30 mm, wherein during the heating process, the plasma arc is split into two heating spots.
EFFECT: improving hardening quality of the working surface of rails subjected to high shock loads by increasing the area and depth of the hardened layer, high hardness and wear resistance, reducing energy intensity and simplifying processing.
