FIELD: mechanical engineering, more specifically, hardening of metals; applicable in surface hardening of machine parts and mechanisms operating in various industries. SUBSTANCE: the offered method includes heating of surface by high-temperature jet positioned at angle of 30-60 dwg to treated surface opposite to direction of its motion with smooth rising of heat flux density from high-temperature jet to treated surface. Time of rising of heat flux density is selected within the limits offered in the invention description. The device for embodiment of the offered method has generator of high-temperature jet with sprayer for cooling of treated zone. The device additionally has box-like module formed by three working faces and installed in the end face of generator of high- temperature jet. In this case, length of box-like module amounts to (7-15)ddc, width of large face of module equalling (2-4)ddc, where dc is diameter of nozzle of high-temperature jet. EFFECT: higher process efficiency, improved hardenability of steels, increased resistance to cracking of hardened articles. 3 cl, 3 dwg , 3 tbl
