FIELD: analytical chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: methods for activating catalyst in ethylene reactions are described. Method of improvement of catalyst performance in trimerization of ethylene to 1-hexene provides: premixing at least one ligand and at least one source of chromium in at least one solvent to form premixed composition; activating of premixed composition with activator to form pre-activated composition and feed pre-activated composition to reactor, where activation involves mixing premixed composition with activator outside reactor and stirring pre-activated composition for 1 minute to 18 hours. As ligand, in particular, ((phenyl)2PN(isopropyl)P(phenyl)NH(isopropyl)).

EFFECT: catalytic activity is more than doubled when all components are mixed outside reactor and stirred for 1 minute to 18 hours before being transferred to reactor.
