FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a catalyst composition and a method for oligomerization of ethylene to produce 1-hexene or 1-octene. Catalyst composition comprises: chromium compound; NPNPN ligand of formula (R1)(R2)N-P(R3)-N(R4)-P(R5)-N(R6)(R7),where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 – each independently is hydrogen, linear or branched C1-C10 alkyl, phenyl, C6-C10 aryl or C6-C20 alkyl-substituted phenyl; and an activator or cocatalyst.

EFFECT: catalyst composition allows producing 1-octene or 1-hexene with high selectivity to produce 1-octene and 1-hexene of high purity and in various ratios.
