FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to polymeric materials with good resistance to environmental cracking. Composition for applications with a high modulus and resistance to environmental stress cracking comprises: i) rubber-modified monovinyl aromatic polymer comprising about 90 weight percent or more of a rigid monovinyl aromatic polymer relative to the total weight of the composition; ii) from about 2 to about 7.5 weight percent of one or more elastomeric polymers containing a diene relative to the total weight of the composition, wherein one or more of the elastomeric polymers containing the diene, is cross-linked so that the light absorption coefficient is 0.5 or more, and has a volume average diameter of 5 mcm to 30 mcm; and more than 2 % by weight to less than 8 % by weight of mineral oil, based on the total weight of the composition; wherein the monovinyl aromatic polymer contains one or more monovinyl aromatic monomers, and monovinyl aromatic polymer has a sufficiently high molecular weight such that retention of elongation at break after 10 days in corn oil at a 1 % stretch is 15 % or more; and wherein the molecular weight of the monovinyl aromatic polymer is characterized by a weight average molecular weight of 200,000 g/mol or more, and the molecular weight distribution of the monovinyl aromatic polymer is characterized by a polydispersity coefficient of 2.7 or more.
