FIELD: data processing.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for allocating bits across sub-bands when encoding audio. Allocated number of bits for a subband in an audio signal frame is estimated in the form of fractional numbers using a predetermined equation including fractional expressions, considering the valid bits for the frame in such a way as to obtain an allocated number of bits for the subband. Allocated number of bits for the subband is set to zero, if the estimated number of allocated bits for the subband is less than zero under this method. For a subband with a number of allocated bits greater than zero, the allocated number of bits is redistributed.
EFFECT: technical result consists in increasing the efficiency of bit allocation in the frequency range important for perception.
