SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical heat treatment, specifically vacuum ion-plasma nitriding, and can be used in machine building. Method for local nitriding of a steel article in a glow discharge in a magnetic field includes performing vacuum heating of a portion of the steel article, subjected to intense wear in high-density nitrogen plasma, wherein said portion of the steel article is placed in the centre of an annular magnetic system, installed on a cathode, in which high-density nitrogen plasma is formed, and vacuum heating is performed to form a nitride layer thereon, consisting of iron nitride Fe4N and chromium nitride Cr4N.
EFFECT: high contact durability and wear resistance of the reinforced layer.
