SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of binaural rendering. Apparatus for processing an audio signal comprises: receiver for receiving input data, wherein the input data comprises a plurality of binaural rendering data sets, each binaural rendering data sets comprising data representing parameters for processing a binaural rendering of the virtual position and providing a different representation of the same underlying stereophonic transfer function, taking into account the position of the head, input data further comprising, for each of the binaural rendering data sets, a presentation indication indicating a representation for the binaural rendering data set; selector for selecting a selected binaural rendering data set in response to presentation instructions and device capabilities; and an audio processor for processing the audio signal in response to the data of the selected binaural rendering data set.
EFFECT: technical result is to provide a more flexible distribution of binaural transfer functions, taking into account the positions of the head.
