FIELD: transportation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for optimising fuel consumption in a vehicle. Disclosed method of signalling an operator of a motor vehicle to optimise stopping distance includes determining a vehicle speed, and determining a preferred time to stop based, at least in part, on the vehicle speed. Maximum acceptable time to stop is determined based, at least in part, on the vehicle speed. Coast rate for the vehicle is determined first, followed by determination of an optimal distance to begin coasting. Method further includes providing a signal to an operator of the vehicle to begin coasting when the vehicle is at the optimal stopping distance.
EFFECT: fuel efficiency and smooth braking of the vehicle.
