FIELD: information technology.
SUBSTANCE: system for providing train information and track characterisation information for use in train performance includes a first element to determine location of a train on a track segment and/or a time from a beginning of the trip. The system also includes a track characterisation element to provide track segment information, and a sensor for measuring operating conditions of the locomotives in the train. A database is provided for storing track segment information and/or the operating condition of the locomotives. A processor is also included to correlate information from elements included in the system. The database is used to create a trip plan which optimises train performance in accordance with one or more operational criteria for the train.
