FIELD: machine building.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for welding butt joints of medium and large thicknesses of structures in various branches of engineering. Angle cutting of the edges of the joint is carried out, forming collars with a cross-sectional area equal to (1–1.2) of the sectional area of the opening of the edges in the joint at the upper part of the joint. Assembling of the elements is carried out without a gap in the root of the seam with a gap between the edges with a backward contact with the top of the joint side of not more than 0.1 mm. Welding is carried out in vacuum with the development of the electron beam with the formation of the root of the seam, the main part of the section of the seam and the lining seam, and the lining seam is formed by melting the mentioned beads. Angle cutting of the edges is performed with an opening angle equal to the angle of convergence of the electron beam. Beam focus is located with a shift upward from the interface by an amount equal to 1/2 of the thickness of the welded elements.

EFFECT: technical result is to improve the quality of welded joints by reducing the width of the heat-affected zone, obtaining a structure close to the main material, more efficient use of electron beam energy.
