SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to surgical instruments, specifically to surgical cutting and stapling tools and cartridges with staples therefor, which are designed to cut and staple tissue with staples. Cartridge comprises: a support, a cartridge body comprising: a deck; and fastener cavities; and a gap setting element formed on and extending from the cartridge body. Cartridge also includes fasteners removably arranged in a non-activated in the cartridge body. Fasteners are movable to an activated position. Cartridge also comprises a compressible tissue thickness compensator arranged relative to the deck, the fasteners being adapted to grip a part of the tissue thickness compensator during movement of the fasteners between the non-activated position and the activated position. Gap setting element is adapted to restrict movement of the support. Cartridge includes: a tissue thickness compensator arranged relative to the deck, the tissue thickness compensator comprising: a compressible body; and an upper surface, wherein the fasteners are adapted to grip a portion of the tissue thickness compensator and contact the support during movement of the fasteners between the non-activated position and the activated position. Gap setting element is adapted to restrict the movement of the support, wherein the relative movement between the support and the tissue thickness compensator provides compression of the tissue thickness compensator and pushing of the upper surface towards the deck, until relative movement is prevented by the gap setting element. End effector for use with the surgical instrument comprises a tissue thickness compensator arranged relative to the deck, the tissue thickness compensator comprising: a compressible body; and an upper surface. Fasteners are adapted to grip a portion of the tissue thickness compensator and to contact the support during movement of the fasteners between the non-activated position and the activated position. Gap setting element is configured to limit the movement of the support and restrict relative movement between the support and the cartridge body.
