FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: described is a coating composition for a food and/or beverage container comprising a polyester material in which the polyester material comprises the reaction product of (a) 1,2-propanediol, (b) terephthalic acid and (c) a molecular weight increasing agent, characterised in that the polyester material has a number average molecular weight (Mn) of at least 6100 Da, determined by gel permeation chromatography using a polystyrene standard in accordance with ASTM D6579-11, and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of at least 80 °C, measured in accordance with ASTM D6604-00 (2013); wherein the molecular weight increasing agent (c) comprises a polyacid, a polyol or a combination thereof; wherein the polyacid comprises a diacid of the general formula (I) , wherein each R is independently hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or aryl group; n = 1; wherein X is a bridging group selected from an alkylene group, an alkenylene group, an alkynylene group, an arylene group; where the bridge between the -COOR groups is C1 or C2; and the hydroxyl groups of the polyol are bonded by a C1-C3 alkylene group. Also described is a container for food and/or beverages, at least part of which is coated with said composition.
EFFECT: technical result is a coating composition having improved film formation characteristics due to a polyester material having a high Mn while maintaining a higher Tg, said polyester material being contained in the composition.
