SUBSTANCE: there is provided a method of improving the dewatering of mineral-containing slurry in a dewatering step of a mineral processing application, the method comprising a step of adding at least one compound of substituted succinic acid having a structure selected from formula (I), formula (II), the acid form thereof, the anhydride form thereof, the salt form thereof, or a combination of two or more thereof, into a slurry or washing water added to the slurry, wherein formula (I) is the following structure: 
and formula (II) is the following structure: 
(II), wherein each R' and R independently represents an alkyl, alkenyl or aromatic hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms.
EFFECT: present invention provides methods and compositions for improving the dewatering of mineral slurries.
