SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. Proposed is a method for adaptive management of free memory space on the storage device when working with databases, in which, when creating a record, for each page of the storage device a metric of a fixed size and a certain type is generated, which is stored separately from the page itself and characterizes the free space on the storage device; data on the average length of records in each table is collected; the type of metric is replaced to more accurately indicate the free space, based on the data collected in the previous step; when a new record is added to the page, a search is made for a page that is suitable for placing the record using the values of metrics; the value of the metric is updated each time a record is written to the page.

EFFECT: technical result is to increase the speed when working in databases using database management systems.
