SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an element for forming a watermark for forming a watermark on paper, a coating of a forming cylinder that contains such an element for forming a watermark, method for producing such a coating of a forming cylinder; a method for producing paper using such a coating of a forming cylinder and paper obtained in this way. Element for forming a watermark has an integrated body that contains a surface forming a watermark, which has one or more watermark forming portions, and a drainage surface. Plurality of drainage channels extend from the front surface openings in the watermark forming surface to the drainage surface. At least some of the openings of the front surface are given a geometric shape in order to define at least one of an alphanumeric character, symbol or pictorial image. Filter layer, located between the watermark-forming surface and the drainage surface, has openings of the filter layer that have a maximum width that is smaller than the smallest width of the front surface openings.
