FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of mono-, di-, tri-, tetramethylthiophenes, which is characterized by the reaction of thiophene with dimethyl disulphide in the presence of a catalyst, a cobalt-modified high-silica zeolite HZSM-5, in the gas phase, at atmospheric pressure, temperature 270–350 °C, the contact time is 1.0–7.4 s.
EFFECT: high selectivity of methylthiophene formation.
