FIELD: organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: described is preparation of phenol and cresols by selective direct oxidation of benzene and/or toluene with nitrous oxide in the presence of heterogeneous catalyst. Catalyst is high-silicon zeolite which is precolcined at 500-950 C and is then modified with promoting additives, e.g. zinc ions or oxide. Catalyst is thereafter activated in air or inert gas at temperatures ranging from 300 to 850 C. Mixture of benzene or toluene and nitrous oxide at molar ratio of (10:1):(1:7) is made to contact with modified catalyst at reaction temperatures from 225 to 350 C. Zeolite is preferably pentasil. EFFECT: higher yield of final products due to greater activity of catalyst. 6 cl, 1 tbl
