SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a sliding element, in particular a piston ring. Sliding element has at least one sliding surface provided with a carbon based coating and at least in some areas having a root-mean-square value of the local angles of inclination of the profile RΔq roughness according to DIN EN ISO 4287, ranging from 0.05 to 0.11 or from 0.08 to 0.1.
EFFECT: providing a sliding element, having an improved combination of the least possible wear and the least possible friction at the beginning of the sliding movement, in particular in an engine.
