FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to methods of application of wear resistant coatings on a cutting tool and can be used in metalworking. Multi-layer coating is applied. First, a lower layer of titanium nitride is applied. Intermediate layer of nitride of titanium and aluminum compound is further applied at the following ratio, wt%: titanium – 83.5–89.5, aluminum – 10.5–16.5. Upper layer of nitride of titanium, aluminum and silicon compound is further applied qt the following, wt%: titanium – 87.7–91.9, aluminum – 7.0–11.0, silicon – 1.1–1.3. Coating layers are applied with three cathodes located horizontally in one plane, the first one of which consists of titanium and aluminum alloy, and the second one consists of titanium and silicon alloy and is located opposite to the first one, and the third one is made of titanium and is located between them, wherein the lower layer is applied using the third cathode, the intermediate layer is applied using the first and third cathodes, and the upper layer is applied using all three cathodes.
EFFECT: result of application of the multi-layer coating is higher cutting efficiency.
