FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of metallurgy. Heating of metal molds during casting of large-size castings made of magnesium and aluminum alloys is controlled by placing heating elements along the mold along its height in at least two tiers. Distance between the heating elements increases from top to bottom along the dependence L×k, where L is the distance between the first and second tiers of the heating elements, and k – the coefficient of increasing the distance between successive tiers, equal to 1.5 for the second and third tiers. For each subsequent tier of heating elements, this coefficient increases by 0.5. In the zones of heating elements, the temperature of the surface of the mold is measured and, when it deviates from the target for each tier, the heat transfer from the corresponding heating elements is changed.
EFFECT: controlled and regulated crystallization is provided, the formation of internal defects in the casting is eliminated.
