SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 3-methyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid which involves contacting 1,3-dimethyl-2-nitrobenzene with an oxidation catalyst in the presence of an oxygen source and an initiator, provided that less than 99 % of 1,3-dimethyl-2-nitrobenzene. Also disclosed is a method of producing a compound of formula 7 and formula 11, the method is characterized by using 3-methyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid obtained using the method described above, where R1 is C1-C7alkyl, C3-C6cycloalkyl or C4-C7alkylcycloalkyl.
EFFECT: disclosed is a method of producing 3-methyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid.
