DEVICE FOR PRODUCTION OF HIGH-PURITY ALUMINUM WITH CARBON-FREE ANODES BY ELECTROLYSIS AND METHOD OF ITS IMPLEMENTATION Russian patent published in 2019 - IPC C25C3/06

Abstract RU 2689475 C1

FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to non-ferrous metallurgy, namely, to device for production of high-purity aluminum (HPA) by electrolysis of fused salts using carbon-free anodes. Device comprises housing with bottom lined with refractory materials, at least one porous membrane impregnated with electrolyte, impermeable for molten aluminum alloy with electropositive impurities, but permeable for electrolyte and aluminum cations, at least, one carbon-free electrode releasing gas arranged in anode compartment of housing, wherein the anode and cathode compartments are separated by a bipolar liquid aluminum electrode on a solid matrix made of an aluminum-insoluble or slightly soluble aluminum material. In points of bipolar electrode connection with walls and bottom there are inserts from material wetted by aluminum. Disclosed is a method of producing of high-purity aluminum (HPA) by electrolysis in the disclosed device using an electrolyte containing at least one salt from a group comprising aluminum fluoride, aluminum chloride and at least one salt from a group containing a sodium, potassium, lithium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum oxide containing material into a device for producing HPA with carbon-free anodes and continuous removal of cathode aluminum and anode gas from the device.

EFFECT: higher purity of aluminum obtained with carbon-free anodes and elimination of the need for an additional refining process and possibility of joint production of aluminum and a semi-finished product containing up to 50 wt% of platinum group metals and rhenium from deactivated catalysts of oil refining and automotive industry.
