FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing aluminum of high purity (AHP) by electrolysis of molten salts with carbon-free anodes and a bipolar electrode-collector of impurities of BPE-C. Method is implemented in an electrolytic cell containing a reservoir separated by a vertical non-conductive baffle inert to the melt used by the baffle to an electrolysis section with a carbon-free anode placed in it and a refining section containing cathode current leads, an AHP which acts as a cathode and a heavy electrolyte. Anode and the cathode are located higher than the BPE-C, and the vertical projections of the anode and the cathode on the horizontal plane of the BPE-C do not intersect each other. Method comprises pouring light electrolyte and loading material containing aluminum oxide into electrolysis section and pouring heavy electrolyte into refining section and performing electrolysis with maintenance of chemical compositions and temperature of heavy, light electrolytes and BPE-C so that density increases in row: high-purity metal – heavy electrolyte – BPE-C, and light electrolyte density is lower than density of BPE-C.
EFFECT: higher purity of aluminum obtained with carbon-free anodes and BPE-C, reduced labor input, material consumption and prime cost of AHP production.
