FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to methods of application of wear resistant coatings on a cutting tool and can be used in metalworking. Vacuum-plasma application of wear-resistant coating of nitride or carbonitride of titanium, zirconium, aluminium, silicon and niobium at their ratio, wt. %: titanium 36.6, zirconium 19.8, aluminium 11.9, silicon 1.5, niobium 30.2. Coating is applied by three cathodes arranged horizontally in one plane, the first cathode is made of zirconium and alloy of aluminium and silicon, the second one is made of niobium and is located opposite to the first one, and the third one is made of titanium and placed between them.
EFFECT: increased functionality of cutting tool.
