FIELD: manufacturing technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to synthesis of new materials and can be used in activities associated with extraction of minerals, with processing industries, with medical industry, for structural elements and mechanisms requiring high wear resistance of surfaces. Method of producing superhard material based on tungsten pentaboride involves sintering tungsten and boron powder at high temperatures and pressures. Starting materials for synthesis are tungsten with particle size of 1–10 mcm, submicron boron with particle size of 0.1–0.5 mcm or boron compound – M-carborane. Synthesis is carried out at pressures of 1.5–8 GPa and 1,000–1,500 °C, with holding time of 1–10 minutes, wherein amount of tungsten in mixture is 50–90 wt%. Sintering process is carried out in apparatus of toroid or piston-cylinder type.
EFFECT: obtaining a new superhard material which combines high hardness and thermal stability with high fracture toughness.
