FIELD: manufacturing technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing mesophase pitch. Raw materials with high content of aromatic substances, preferably oil pitch with softening point higher than 100 °C, preheated to temperature above softening point and mixed with steam, preferably water vapor, in long tubular reactor under conditions of intense mixing, preferably developed turbulent flow, such as dispersed-annular flow, with residence time is at least an order less than in methods according to prior art, preferably less than 10 seconds. Preferably, the reactor is heated by electric resistance or inductive heating or by immersion into heated liquid or flame heater. Mesophase pitch is obtained with high coke number and unexpectedly low content of substances insoluble in quinoline. Content of olefin and diene in by-products of thermal polymerisation and thermal dealkylation is less than 50 % compared to similar by-products in prior art processes.

EFFECT: disclosed is a method of producing mesophase pitch (versions).
