FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing pitch from a starting material, where the starting material contains one of the following materials: (i) decantate from petroleum products, (ii) heavy coal tar distillate. Method comprises feeding said starting material in a fluid liquid phase into a heat-conducting part of a channel at least partially made from a heat-conducting material which promotes heat transfer; controlled supply of heat to said heat-conducting part of said channel containing initial material to increase temperature of initial material to 459–535 °C at pressure of at least 46 pounds per sq in. (g), so as to maintain said starting material in liquid phase; maintaining a substantially uniform flow of said initial material through at least a portion of said heat-conducting part of said channel at a substantially constant temperature for a period of time sufficient to convert part of said starting material into pitch while limiting formation of mesophase to 0.7 wt. % in a combined stream; reduction of temperature of said combined flow to 275–385 °C, separation of said pitch from said combined flow and obtaining finished pitch. Invention also relates to a continuous method of producing pitch, finished pitch, a heat treatment subsystem for producing pitch and a distillation system for producing pitch.

EFFECT: optimization of pitch yield, reduction of insoluble quinoline content and creation of mesophase in pitch.
