FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of preparing a catalyst precursor which contains a catalytically active material and a support material, and to a catalyst precursor. Catalyst can be used in synthesis of hydrocarbons. Method of preparing a hydrogenation catalyst precursor involves mixing an acidic solution containing cobalt ions, a suspension containing a support material and at least an alkaline solution which does not contain ammonia, its salts and/or its releasing compounds, wherein mixing of the acidic solution, suspension and alkaline solution results in cobalt precipitation in a sediment in the presence of carrier material to obtain a mixture containing a precipitate. At least acidic solution contains a carboxylic acid or a base conjugated therewith. Catalyst precursor contains cobalt (II) salt on carrier material, after calcination precursor contains crystallites from metal oxides, wherein size of crystallites measured using XRD (X-ray diffractometry) is maximum 8 nm, wherein cobalt (II) is present in form of cobalt hydroxyl carbonate, cobalt hydroxide and/or cobalt hydroxycarbonate.
EFFECT: technical result is obtaining a catalyst with improved selectivity and activity.
