FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing styrene or substituted styrenes, comprising steps of: (a) providing dehydration of feedstock containing 1-phenylethanol or substituted 1-phenylethanol, in the presence of a suitable dehydration catalyst; (b) providing separation treatment of the obtained mixture of products, thereby obtaining a stream containing water and styrene or substituted styrene, and a residual fraction containing heavy epoxy; (c) treating a stream containing water and styrene or substituted styrene with a base; (d) separating the stream treated at step (c) into a styrene-rich or substituted styrene-rich product stream and a waste water stream depleted of styrene or a substituted styrene; (e) treating a stream of waste water depleted of styrene or substituted styrene with steam in a stripping column, thereby obtaining a treated effluent stream and treated stream containing steam and styrene or substituted styrene.
EFFECT: use of the disclosed method enables to obtain styrene with maximum output and, at the same time, a reduced amount of contamination of the heat exchanger.
