FIELD: petrochemical industry. SUBSTANCE: styrene is prepared by catalytic dehydration of methyl-phenyl carbinol on catalyst comprising aluminium oxide. Methylphenyl carbinol fraction which has boiling temperature of 150-400 C is used in amount of 0.5-30 wt %. Steam or mixture of steam and hydrogen-containing gas, or nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, or mixtures thereof are added to said fraction and heated to reaction temperature in one stream before being admitted into catalytic zone. EFFECT: increased yield of styrene and longer service life of the catalyst. 9 cl, 1 tbl
