SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for detecting position (12) of abdomen/back of fish transported by transporting appliance (13). Method includes transportation of fish (12) by means of appliance (13) in its longitudinal direction (11), pairwise optical scanning of abdominal side (15) and dorsal side (16) of fish (12) to determine first profile of brightness values of first side and second profile brightness values of the second side of each fish (12). By ordering the brightness values of the first profile and the second profile, in accordance with the predetermined ordering criterion, determining the first and second ordered data sequences and the first and second medians from the first and second ordered data sequences. At least one value of deviation from the first median and second median is determined, and position of abdomen/back is determined by comparing said at least one deviation value with at least one specified control value. Invention also relates to the appropriate device.

EFFECT: invention provides high accuracy of positioning abdomen/fish back, even if it is not located exactly in longitudinal direction.
