FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a composition for use in photodynamic therapy, as well as for photodynamic detection of abnormally proliferating cells, containing a) 5-amino-4-oxopentanoic acid (5-aminolevulinic acid or 5-ALA) or its HCl salt (5-ALA-HCl) as an active ingredient; b) a first agent enhancing penetration of 5-aminolevilic acid into skin, selected from one or more non-ethoxylated water-soluble ether compounds; and c) a second agent enhancing penetration of 5-aminolevilic acid into skin, selected from one or more glycosaminoglycan compounds, wherein said composition is a topical composition in form of a low-viscous hydrogel having a viscosity of about 1000–13000 MPa·s at 32 °C.
EFFECT: present invention provides improved penetration of 5-aminolevulinic acid into skin and provides proper stability of 5-aminolevulinic acid or its pharmaceutically acceptable salt, such as hydrochloride.
