FIELD: machine building.

SUBSTANCE: disclosed is an electric retarder, which is a non-frictional action brake having an electromagnetic winding on the stator, and a rotor coupled to the drive wheels. Retarder is installed in transmission with geared variator or in non-driving wheels. During operation of the brake in the stator winding a traveling rotating electromagnetic field is created, which varies not only against the rotor rotation, but also in the direction of its rotation. Each position of the control element is matched with the braking moment value. During control, available and specified braking moments are calculated. In case of deviation of the braking moment from the preset one, control is performed by deviation using the non-linear control law. Traveling electromagnetic field changes direction of its rotation to create moment on shaft, at starting, at start-up at lifting, for braking at movement backward, at starting at lift to exclude recoil, and in connection retarder rotor with driving wheels by gear variator and using a mechanical stepped gearbox and no clutch to increase the angular speed of the driven secondary shaft of the gearbox when starting transmission on a stationary vehicle.

EFFECT: possibility of braking with retarder up to complete stop, increase in retarder power capacity, increase in service life of friction brakes.
