FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a potassium permanganate-containing composition for use as an oxidant in demercurization using hydrochloric acid in order to chemically remove mercury from residential or industrial premises. Composition contains a mixture of potassium permanganate crystals in amount of 1–60 wt% and filler – the rest. Filler used is sodium sulphate or magnesium sulphate having an average crystal size which differs from the average size of potassium permanganate crystals in the mixture by not more than 10 %.

EFFECT: reduced oxidative activity of the composition while maintaining the ability to oxidise hydrochloric acid during demercurization, high safety of use thereof, as well as elimination of possibility of physical separation of composition with extraction of pure potassium permanganate.
