FIELD: electrical equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to electric engineering, namely to switches and contactors of alternating or direct current, breaking electric circuit with occurrence of electric arc and its further damping in electric insulating medium, for example, in sulphur hexafluoride, nitrogen, oil, air or vacuum. Method for electric arc quenching consists in that as distance between arc-extinguishing contacts increases, solenoidal channels are formed with correspondingly increasing number of turns, which are extended according to value of this distance, which are filled with electric arc performing rotary-translational motion. Device for electric arc quenching comprises main hollow electrically insulating body, main and arc-extinguishing contacts, additional electric insulating body is installed in cavity of main body, wherein gap between surfaces of both bodies comprises sections with extensions, which correspond to solenoidal channels, wherein when the device is on, both main and arc-quenching contacts are electrically closed, arc-quenching contacts are located in one of the ends of said channels, wherein one part of arc-quenching contacts is mechanically connected to the additional body, and the other part - with the main body, and with the device switched off, the main and arc-quenching contacts are open, at that the above parts of arc-quenching contacts are located in the opposite ends of the channels. Additional body in the device can be made in the form of a piston.

EFFECT: technical result is higher efficiency of electric arc quenching process.
