A method for generating a signal indicative of imminent ice formation on the roadway prior to its appearance on the roadway includes radiation evaluation. The reference surface is formed from a material different from the material of the road surface, the material of the reference surface is selected from a material on which ice forms earlier than on the material of the road surface.
