FIELD: means for encoding and decoding audio signals.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of encoding/decoding an audio signal segment. The technical result described below is achieved by determining which of the two lossless coding schemes requires the least number of bits to encode the positions of the spectral peaks of the audio signal segment; selecting an encoding scheme that requires the least number of bits to encode the spectral peak positions of an audio segment; and indicating the selected encoding scheme to the decoder; wherein the second lossless encoding scheme contains: division of the bit vector representing the positions of the spectral peaks into successive equal-sized groups of bits; logical addition of the bits in each group of bits to form a group bit vector; compression of non-zero groups of bits by using constraints in the minimum allowable distance between two consecutive peaks; and providing a group bit vector and compressed non-zero groups of bits for transmission.

EFFECT: reduced bit consumption when encoding spectral peaks.
