FIELD: computer technology.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to the field of computer technology for determining the direction of rotation of a target object. The specified method for determining the direction of rotation of the target object includes: entering continuous video frames containing the rotating target object; creating a background model according to an image on the first frame of the specified video frames; performing foreground detection on each video frame, except the first, and determining the axis of rotation of the rotating target object using the background model; obtaining the distribution of optical flow points located within a given area of the center of the axis of rotation, and determining the direction of rotation of the rotating target object according to the specified distribution of optical flow points within the given area.
EFFECT: increase in the efficiency of determining the direction of rotation of the target object on the video material.
