SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing 2-hydroxy-4(methylthio)butane acid (hereinafter – HMTBa) from 2-hydroxy-4-methylthio-butyronitrile (hereinafter – HMTBN). The method is carried out by hydrolysis of HMTBN in HMTBa in the present of mineral acid in an aqueous medium. Then, the resulting medium is neutralized by adding a base; the first phase containing at least HMTBa and salts and the second phase containing salts are separated. The separation of HMTBa from salts of the first phase is carried out by chromatography of the latter, including both steric and ion exclusion.

EFFECT: method allows for the effective separation of HMTBa from ammonium salts in one stage, as well as the prevention of oligomer formation.
