SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of computer technology for processing audio signals. The first gain factor of a linear prediction is calculated as a ratio between residue signal energy from the first linear prediction and residue signal energy from the second linear prediction for an audio signal segment, wherein the second linear prediction originates from a higher order than the first linear prediction; the second gain factor of a linear prediction is calculated as a ratio between residue signal energy from the second linear prediction and residue signal energy from the third linear prediction for an audio signal segment, wherein the third linear prediction originates from a higher order than the second linear prediction; it is determined, whether the audio signal segment contains a pause based on at least the specified at least one parameter; if it is determined that the audio signal segment contains a pause, estimation of background noise is updated based on the audio signal segment.

EFFECT: increase in the accuracy of estimation of background noise in audio signals.
