A method for the detection in vitro of apolipoprotein selected from a group consisting of apoAI, apoAIV, apoCI, apoCIII, apoE and apoJ, a method for the determination in vitro of the relative amount of E4 isoform, apoE apolipoprotein relatively to the total content of the specified apolipoprotein in a sample, a method for the determination of the probability that a patient has a developing neurodegenerative disease, which includes determining levels of E4 apoE isoform in a sample from the specified patient, as well as in vitro use of a kit containing a polystyrene surface blocked by albumin, an antibody with apolipoprotein apoE4 specificity and including detection and/or quantification of apoE apolipoprotein, are disclosed.
