SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REHABILITATION (RESTORATION) OF THE SENSE OF SMELL AND TASTE, AS WELL AS CORRECTION OF EMOTIONAL AND COGNITIVE DISORDERS USING THE BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACE Russian patent published in 2022 - IPC A61H99/00 A61M11/00 A61M15/00 A61B5/369

Abstract RU 2768172 C1

FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medicine, namely to a system and method for rehabilitation of smell and taste based on the brain-computer interface. The system includes a device for displaying a training task and/or its execution, a device for registering brain activity, an olfactory display for influencing the trained function and a computer for recognizing and isolating registered brain activity signals with the ability to isolate signals of evoked potentials and signals of the olfactory cortex and interpreting the selected registered signal using a database. The computer is designed with the ability to transmit commands generated based on the interpretation of recorded brain activity signals to an olfactory display and/or to a display device based on the receive-transmit principle. At the same time, the display device is provided with a training task aimed at restoring the affected function of smell and taste. Brain activity signals are recorded by a brain activity recording device. The registered signals are transmitted to the computer. The signals of brain activity necessary for interpretation, including signals of evoked potentials and signals of the olfactory zone of the cerebral cortex, are isolated by means of a computer. The selected signals are interpreted by matching with the database. Commands generated based on the interpretation of recorded brain activity signals are transmitted to an olfactory display and/or display device. The trained function is affected using an olfactory display. Signals are transmitted to the display device. The progress and the degree of completion of the task are represented by the display device. The involvement of the patient is achieved to a greater extent in an imaginary process with a clearer and more imaginative representation of the task performed by the patient and, accordingly, an increase in the manifestation of brain activity and the joint work of several zones of the cortex and subcortical structures to complete the task, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the formation of brain activity signals.

EFFECT: increase in the effectiveness of the rehabilitation of the senses of smell and taste is provided by stimulating the restoration of smell and taste senses by forming a neural biofeedback between olfactory, visual, sound, tactile stimuli and sensations of the patient, as well as by changing the level of brain activity associated with odor recognition.
