SUBSTANCE: present invention is intended for use of a composition containing indigestible oligosaccharides for the treatment or prevention of non-allergic rhinitis in humans, where the person is a child and where the non-allergic rhinitis is non-infectious non-allergic rhinitis, and wherein the indigestible oligosaccharides include galactooligosaccharides with an average degree of polymerisation (DP) of 2 to 10 and fructooligosaccharides with an average DP of 11 to 60, and where the composition contains from 2.5 to 20 wt. % total indigestible oligosaccharide from the total dry weight of the composition or, if the composition is in liquid form, composition contains from 0.35 to 2.5 wt. % total indigestible oligosaccharide per 100 ml of the composition.

EFFECT: suppressing the inflammatory response of human nasal epithelial cells in healthy individuals without allergies, reducing the secretion of pro-inflammatory chemokines, such as IP-10, CCL5 and CCL20, in the epithelial cells, improved barrier function of nasal epithelium cells, increased or decreased transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER).
