FIELD: chemical technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the chemical technology of organic substances, namely, to the production of titanium dioxide from ilmenite. The fluorination of ilmenite with ammonium fluoride is carried out and the separation of the titanium component of ilmenite in the form of gaseous ammonium fluorotitanate and the ferruginous component in the form of solid iron difluoride is carried out. In this case, the fluorination of ilmenite is carried out with gaseous ammonium fluoride or solid ammonium fluoride at a temperature of 200-250°C. The resulting iron difluoride is subjected to pyrohydrolysis by treating it at a temperature of 200-250°C with reaction gases containing ammonia and water obtained by fluorination of ilmenite with ammonium fluoride to produce iron (II) oxide. Titanium dioxide is isolated at a temperature of 300-350°C with the treatment of the gaseous phase of ammonium fluorotitanate with gaseous products containing ammonia, water and hydrogen fluoride, while gaseous ammonia and hydrogen fluoride obtained after the stage of titanium dioxide production are sent for fluorination of a new batch of ilmenite.
EFFECT: method makes it possible to obtain titanium dioxide without the use of liquid-phase reactions and wet filtration stages of hydrated titanium dioxide from the solution while maintaining its quality.
